Itchy eyes or conjunctivitis

I’m not allowed to see my friends because I have this unpronounceable disease called “conjunctivitis” and I’m something called “contagious”. My eyes are all itchy and when I woke up this morning they didn’t look very pretty either. So my hooman rushed to the pharmacy. Yes, the one for people. Because a friend of her is a vet and she once told her that the stuff in the eyedrops is exactly the same for hoomans and dogs just the price tag is different. The doggy ones are a lot more expensive.

You do need to know if the conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria or by an allergy. It was quite obvious that I had the bacteria caused one because my BBF Max and Bessie were having the same symptoms yesterday. I guess lots of kisses and face licks didn’t help …

My hooman bought them and me “Chlorsig” in the Pharmacy. (Apparently in the Pharmacy she bought it yesterday it was $17.95 in the one she bought it today it was $7.95 hmmm?!) I have to use it every 4 hours for the first 2 days and then 4 times a day for 3 more days. After that it is really important to throw the bottle out as it doesn’t keep after opening!!!!

Conjunctivitis is the most common eye problem that occurs in dogs, according to Vet Info. Tissue, called conjunctiva, lines the eyelids and attaches to the eyeball near the cornea. Inflammation or infection of this tissue is conjunctivitis. The inflamed white of the eyeball may appear red or pink, which is why conjunctivitis is also called pink eye or red eye.
The causes of conjunctivitis include irritation caused by allergies and infections caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi. Conjunctivitis may also be a symptom of a more serious condition, such as distemper, so evaluation by a veterinarian is important. Canine conjunctivitis symptoms vary, depending on the cause.

Inflammation and Swelling
Both allergies and infections cause inflammation and swelling of the conjunctiva, which leads to a severe redness of the eye. Also, the dog’s third eyelid swells and stays partially closed.

Squinting and Eye Rubbing
A dog with conjunctivitis squints its eyes. The dog may also rub the affected eye(s) with a paw or on carpet or furniture due to the pain.

Eye Discharge
Both allergies and infections can cause a discharge from the affected eye. The color and consistency of the discharge depend on the cause of the dog’s conjunctivitis. Allergies usually cause a thin, mostly colorless discharge. Infections tend to create a thick yellow or greenish pus that may cause the dog’s eyelids to stick together when the dog closes its eyes.

Beach with my new beach collar

Not sure why hoomans always have to be like, well, like they are… “We gonna take time off in between Christmas and New Years!” (they didn’t), “We will take you to the beach all the time.” (must have been another dog), “We are going to the beach tomorrow.” (maybe the one from across the road?) ,”We are going to the beach soon!” (That was definitely me – I heard that quite a few times)

Ok – I’ll give them some credit here. They took a lot more time to take me to exciting places in the past few weeks but still to the big beach, just twice.

I have written about that beautiful doggy beach a few times already. HERE and HERE. We still haven’t figured out the name of the beach but it is near Wollongong and if you put “Bellambi Recreation Area” into google maps it is the beach right there.

Something makes me think that one of the reasons my hoomans took me there was to finally test my new Surf Dog Australia beach collar… What can I say? I got lots of compliments from the dogs I said hello to on our walk and from their people. Everyone we met lives close to the beach so they have even more issues with those smelly collars then I have. After all I’m a big city dog most of the time. The collar served it’s purpose: no smell! I’m especially proud of the fact that it says “Surf Dog” on it. Makes me feel really cool.

PS from my person: The collar is really great when you take your dog to the beach a lot or even just once in a while. It actually doesn’t matter how often you go fabric collars smell after one time and metal ones get rusty. The Surf Dog one is solid rubber and I would say it will last us a lifetime. No smell and it looks flash. I only think I was a little optimistic with the size as I always imagine my dog bigger than he is. (hmmmmmm)

It comes in :

S – Fits neck size 24cm – 34cm. Width 2cm.
M – Fits neck size 35cm – 42 cm. Width 2.5cm
L – Fits neck size 43cm – 52 cm. Width 2.5cm
LW – Wide band. Fits neck size 43cm – 52cm. Width. 3cm.

I went for the LW and it really is meant for big dogs as it is quite heavy. Teal’c would have done just fine with a L and 2.5cm width.
Bottom line: we love it!

Beach collar from Surf Dog Australia

As you all know – I’m a real Aussie beach dog! There is nothing better than jumping into the surf, swimming, rolling in the sand and washing it all off just to roll again. Unfortunately that is rather tough on my collars. My hooman prefers those stainless steal collars for our day to day walks but they don’t last long under beachy conditions. Have a look at the pics! All rusty. Admittedly the poor thing went through 1 month of everyday beach abuse and then ended up in a box in our humid climate. So they are actually great under normal conditions and with fresh water but still not the best choice for the beach. And do you know what happens to fabric collars???? THEY START STINKING! Not just smell they do stink. The leaving-in-front-of-the-door kind of stench.

So there is the solution: a Stay Dry collar from Surf Dog Australia! They say on their page that they are completely waterproof so there’s nothing to get soggy, smelly and itchy. Mine hasn’t arrived yet but I have 3 weeks of fun ahead of me before my dad has to fly away again and I have been promised that there will be a lot of beach action – so bring it on! I’ll test it and will let you know my verdict. One thing I can say for sure already: it looks pretty flash!!!!! I have decided for the blue one as the summer sun turns my fur from shiny black to even shinier chocolate brown. Brown and blue is a nice combination, me thinks.

My day to day collars are usually as shiny as I am...

But not if you use them every day on the beach!

So that's going to be my new beach collar from Surf Dog Australia.

They also have those yellow doggy beach robes which my mum finds incredibly cute. Only my dad thinks it would make me look like a girl...

Other hoomans always ask my hooman what the secret of my incredibly shiny fur is… Well, I think there are a few! Number one is that I have an awesome life, nothing to worry about, lots of friends, 18h sleep a day, regular cuddles and long walks and plays every day – I tell you, it really is a dogs life! Then I guess there is my diet. Nothing commercial, no dry food just raw meat, bones, chickens (even if I would probably prefer the running around kind I get them dead with no feathers…) and lots of raw veggies. In my opinion all of that would make me shiny enough to get the girls attention but no – there are also SHOWERS. I hates showers! Don’t get me wrong I do love water and also chasing the hose in the backyard but “showers” usually come after having a lot of fun doing things like rolling in the mud or going to the beach. Personally I also think they are a complete waste of time but my hooman considers them a necessity. SIGH! BAH!

Anyway… As my mum is trying to do her bit for the environment she started a while ago to use soap instead of shower gel, face wash and hair shampoo (no plastic bottles, no waste and no chemicals). After trying a few products she finally found a Tasmanian Company called “Beauty and the Bees“. Top priority for my hoomans is that the products they use are not tested on animals and that they are chemical free – in both categories Beauty and the Bees scores 100 points. They also don’t use any palm oil but are honest about the fact that they did in the past.

About a year ago, while my mum put her very first order together, she also stumbled about the Buster’s bonza bewdy bar for bonza blokes pet shampoo. It ended up in her shopping cart and is my soap of choice ever since.

As I’m a short haired dog I come with lot’s of skin problems like dry and itchy skin. Usually regular showers made it worse so that I only got hosed down most of the time. Since we use the soap from the Beauty and the Bees I do look fantastic and my skin isn’t dry anymore. My fur is not just shiny but also very, very soft and as much as I hate showers it seems to get me in the good books with the girls (hooman and doggie!!). That makes it well worth – don’t you think?!

Finally it got public attention! For me it is quite shocking how few people actually know how their meat dies… What do you think? It walks happily and calm into the slaughterhouse?! Anyway now that it was on national TV lots of people have woken up and I’m asking all of Master Teal’cs friends, no matter from where you are as there is an “outside Australia” option, to sign the petition. Hello everyone out there! While I was at home being sick I had some time to read through all my bloggie friends blogs and found something really interesting on Mayzie’s blog! My friend Mayzie is always busy helping other dogs and I wanna do my bit too! Mayzie had a link on her blog to a blog called OH MY DOG and there is something on called a camp-pain against BSL in Denver… Now, we are far, far away from Denver but I made my mum design a card anyway because that is what it is about – she wants to collect a mile of postcards to hopefully stop this madness.

It is really easy! You go to her bloggie, download the postcard template and put a nice pic in there and a few words… And I think every doggie should convince their hoomans to help! It doesn’t matter what breed you are – you might be next!

STOP ANIMAL TESTING – MALAYSIA

Poo Patrol, we take your crap seriously

Ahhh – we had such a good laugh today, my mum and I!!!! We were searching the net for articles on eco-friendly doggie poo bags. So we clicked away and as it happens came from one page to the next, click, click, click and then there was the “POO PATROL” how could we have possibly resisted that one?! We couldn’t, we had to have a look. Can you believe it? They come to your place and clean up after us dogs! WOW! I mean – come on… Who would pay someone to do that? We dogs, obviously can’t do it alone. Fair enough. Somehow my mum and me think that this is a service for elder people – we can kind of understand this! Or for people that think a big backyard (some think a balcony will do) is all a dog needs. Unfortunately there are heaps of those people in Australia leaving their poor dogs sitting in the backyard all day long. Personally I don’t like using MY backyard as a toilet. So I don’t. But if no one would take me for walkies I would have to whether I like it or not.

But that is off topic. We just wanted to share the link with you guys. It is worth clicking and if it is only for the song!!!!!! So funny!!!!

PS from my mum: If I ever need a poo picking up service I would go for this guys. If they can make a website as funny as the one they have they can only be awesome in what they are doing!!!

Daisy taged me for a Photo meem! Here are the rules:

We didn’t exactly stick to the rules as the tenth picture from the most recent folder was my mom’s favorite food – HALUMI! Squeaky cheese – yuck! If it would have been meat ok but cheese?! On the other hand would it be difficult for anyone to catch my hoomans with a plate full of meat anyway – weirdo plant eaters…

Now here the picture with slightly changed rules. My mom has all her images in a library called Aperture Library. She closed her eyes and randomly selected a folder. Which took a while because she kept hitting the desktop or other things that weren’t photo-folders. And her we go: LITTLE ME! The folder was called Teal’c 5th day Manly regen (German for “rain”). I can’t really remember that day – I was too little but I remember that there was a woman in the back of the car with me playing with me all the time. That made me so perfectly tired that my mom could have lunch in Manly while I was sleeping in the car. She checked on me every 5 minutes but apparently I didn’t move. The lady in the car is the mother of a German friend of my mom. They were in Sydney when my hoomans rescued me and there were the first ones to find out about me as new family addition… “Sorry we gotta cancel the dinner tonight – we just got a dog!”

See how I have already started to chew the sides of my little basked thingy?!
