Holidays in Melbourne – are dogs welcome?!

melbMe and my family, fine – more my family, were thinking of going to Melbourne for a long weekend… And actually they are thinking of not taking me because they aren’t sure how dog friendly Melbourne is. Has anyone an idea? Any recommendations? How are the beaches?! The reason why I ask is that I’m kind of afraid to be left behind :( The discussion is at the moment car vs plane. Car means I’m coming plane means I  get to spend the weekend at a friends place. Which is, don’t get me wrong, great but I would rather come along…

In NSW for example are just a few doggie beaches (compared to the number of beaches they have in the first place) and almost none in Sydney – again, compared to the actual number of beaches… So I was manly wondering how the situation in and around Melbourne is!? I already found  a BLOG where is says that dogs are only allowed during certain times of the year but I don’t know which beach it is.

Thanks for your help! :) Teal’c

    Hi, Tealc
Where are you thinking of going in Melbourne? I would say basically it’s a dog-friendly city, but it depends on the area. For instance, one difference is that dogs are allowed on trains here, which I think they aren’t in Sydney. But you need to check the rules, at http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/using-public-transport/animals-on-public-transport/
The beach I went to is at Brighton, and it’s called Green Point, though I couldn’t find it under this name on a map. It’s just past the Brighton Yacht Club. You can go there up till 10 am, I think, from 1st November. Before that, in winter, dogs were allowed all day.

If you have more definite plans, I’d be happy to check out places for you, by asking around.

We have heaps of nice parks where dogs are allowed off-lead.

Hi Parlance – my parents friends live in St. Kilda but it is not sure if they actually stay at their place. When the time comes I’ll tell you! Thanks heaps for your help.
Nah – no dogs allowed in public transport in Sydney. Something my mom had to get used to as in Germany it is allowed everywhere – even on trains and busses. Which I think is great. I mean – we are family, aren’t we?
I found Brighton it looks cool from above! :)

PS: say hello to penny – she is a real cutie!!!

St Kilda – I think you can go on the beach there just after dawn. To be quite honest, once summer comes you wouldn’t want to be on the beach in the middle of the day anyway.

Brighton isn’t far from St Kilda.

Have you been to the blog called Noah’s Bark? It’s a family of dogs that live in a dog-friendly bed and breakfast. (Not sure it’s actually a bed-and-breakfast, but it’s an accommodation place in the Blue Mountains.) It’s on my itinerary one of these days, when I get organised to travel a bit.

    I enjoy reading their blog.

I had a read as well – that looks like a cool family! So many dogs – I need to remind my mom that she was thinking of adopting a brother for me but she added “sometime”. I never know exactly what that means with humans :( But I’ll definitely keep the link as the last tie we went there we had a hard time finding doggy walks and I bet they know! :)
